A study at Manchester Metropolitan University demonstrated superior heart strength in canoeists. The average mass of the left ventricle (one of the chambers of the heart) was more than 50 per cent greater in canoeists than in sedentary people, enabling them to pump blood around the body more efficiently.

These facts do not include the portaging factor of canoe tripping in the outdoors. Within a portage, depending on the intensity, Cardiovascular Endurance plays a big part in the role of portaging. A portage is tha carrying of a boat and (or) it's cargo between two navigable waters. I know that portaging a canoe plays a big role in cardiovascular endurance because if you have a big load, by the end you are usually out of breath and your heart is working very hard.
